In the years leading up to his seminal release, Smith released two albums: 1994’s Roman Candle and 1995’s Elliott Smith. Margaret Mittleman in an interview with Pitchfork commemorating Elliott Smith’s life and careerĮven though Elliott Smith had been involved with a punk band for most of the early to late 1990s, he was making soft, acoustic music that was too ambitious to be labeled as ‘folk’. When I would tell the other bands I was working with that I was working with Elliott Smith, they’d be like, “Oh, why? That’s weird.” Eventually, of course, they became his biggest fans. Today, we remember an influential artist and his beloved masterpiece: 1997’s haunting Either/Or. Hello!
